The monsoon is predicted to arrive in Kerala on the 31st of May 2011 and from the Keralan coast it will make its way through India. Before the arrival of the monsoon, and even during the first rains, much of India is unbearably hot. When the first rains arrive, it’s simply going to be just as hot but a bit more humid, and it takes a while before the weather cools down. So where can you go in India in June, considering that parts of the country still experience temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or more, and parts of it will be getting quite a lot of rain towards the end of June?
Ladakh
Ladakh in the Indian Himalayas is mainly high altitude desert in the Himalayan rain shadow, and June to August is the high season here. The road from Manali to Leh only opens in May and stays open until October, so June is one of the best times to go; if you get to Leh in early June you may avoid the biggest holiday crowds while you visit Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and enjoy the scenery of snow-capped mountains, clear blue sky and lots of prayer flags on rooftops.
Lahaul and Spiti
Large parts of the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys, in Himachal Pradesh, don’t get much rain at all even during the monsoon season. If you’re taking the road from Manali to Leh in Ladakh, you will travel through parts of Lahaul. Lahaul and Spiti are some of the less explored areas in India and the scenery in the parts of Lahaul that I have travelled through was out of this world.
