Tips for Studying Yoga in Mysore (Part 2)

Things to do in Mysore that have nothing to do with yoga:

Shopping

Rashinkar (# 1640, Shivarampet, near Devaraja URS Road): yoga mats, bags, clothes, textiles, scarves, and affordable tailors.

Badsha (several locations around town including Devaraja URS Road): sari’s, textiles, scarves, skirts, shirts for men for women, and tailors if you want to have your favourite dress copied in cheap Indian fabric.

Fab India (#451, JLB Road, Near R.T.O Circle,Chamarajpuram): everyone loves Fab India’s modernized and slightly Westernized versions of Indian clothes. I have never found anything I want to wear even though I have tried, but it seems everyone else goes home with suitcases full of Fab India clothes. You can find clothes for women, men and children, as well as household textiles and a range of fancy teas and other good souvenirs. Prices are higher than in most other stores but the quality seems to be higher too.

Devaraja URS Road and Sayyaji Rao Road are the main shopping streets in the centre of Mysore. The Devaraja Market is a good place for incense and other cheap souvenirs. For better quality (but badly overpriced) souvenirs and for genuine Mysore Sandalwood oil, head to the Cauvery Emporium on Sayyaji Rao Road.

Bookshops:

Ashok Book Center (396, Devaraja Market Building, Dhanvanthri Road) has a collection of English books. Sapna Book House (No.1433, Next To Gayathri Bhavan, Narayan Shastry Road, Devaraja Mohalla) is a new and modern bookstore in Mysore, good for English books.

Swimming Pools

A few hotels in Mysore let non-guests use their swimming pools for a day rate (or a monthly fee). The most popular with yoga students are the Regaalis (former Southern Star, 13-14 Vinoba Road) and the Lalitha Mahal, but new pools are appearing all the time.

Good places for coffee and cake:

Barista (near Loyal World, conveniently just a few minutes from Gokulam and the KPJAYI): good cappuccino.

Coffee Day (on top of Devaraja URS Rd, and also on Kalidasa Road): very good chocolate cakes.

Nice places for lunch or dinner:

Here are three nice places to have lunch or dinner when you can’t take another cheap South Indian thali anymore:

Green Hotel (on the Hunsur Road, Jayalakshmipuram): always a favourite; beautiful gardens, big portions and a new coffee shop for cakes and coffees.

Olive Garden: located in the same premises with the Windflower Resort (The Windflower Spa and Resorts, Maharanapratap Road, Nazarbad, Mysore) and a very popular place for dinner.

Metropole (in the corner of Hunsur Rd and JLB Road) famous for its breakfast buffet, but also a nice choice for a dinner in the garden or drinks in the bar.
